Frequently Asked Questions
Here are a few of the questions people frequently ask about Acupuncture and Shiatsu Therapy.
The initial one to two hour session involves a question and answer intake, where personal health information is gathered and kept confidentially. Tongue observation and pulse palpation is done, and area of chief complaint also palpated if necessary. Then a treatment plan is formulated and some treatment given in the first session. Treatment can include Shiatsu, Acupuncture, and/or the modalities as outlined in the Modalities tab. In an Acupuncture session, generally the practitioner is with you the whole time, or checking on you frequently. Once treatment is finished, homecare advice is usually given and a plan for subsequent sessions is advised.
Subsequent sessions are usually an hour in duration. Questions are asked at the beginning of subsequent sessions about any changes to the chief complaint, and some lifestyle/current condition questions also. Pulse and tongue are checked prior to the continuation of treatment according to the plan formulated in the initial intake.
It depends on the severity of the condition, and how long a patient has had it. In acute cases, weekly or twice weekly treatments are recommended for a few sessions, then are assessed based on response. A patient may respond well right away and require fewer treatments. In chronic cases, weekly treatments are recommended for anywhere from 4 to 12 sessions, then once the initial symptoms have been eased, the intervals between treatments are lengthened. The practitioner makes the recommendation but together the practitioner and patient decide when to revisit. If there is no response after about 5 treatments, then referral onward may be necessary.
There may be an initial pinching feeling, similar to a mosquito bite, that should dissipate once the needle has been inserted to the appropriate depth. Some people who are hypersensitive may feel the needles more than other people. The practitioner works with you to make adjustments so that it is more tolerable. As the patient you have the right to terminate treatment at anytime during the session if you are too uncomfortable.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Bring a list of your prescription medications to your first session, and inform the practitioner of any updates in subsequent sessions. Ensure you have eaten something before treatment, but not a large meal. You don’t want to be hungry, but not overfull either. Coffee or coloured drink consumption will affect tongue colouring and makes diagnosis more difficult. Try not to over-exert yourself physically, consume drugs or alcohol up to 3 hours before or after treatment. Arrange time to relax afterwards and get rest.
